This band from the Bay Area stressed unfashionable blue-collar values and no-nonsense, unflashy songs. Easily accessible to a wide audience, they churned out a steady release of top singles, including "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary." Their sound was straightforward and stripped-down, deeply influenced by rockabilly and by what singer-songwriter John Fogarty called "swamp" music: a mixture of Chicago electric blues, early rockabilly, and a touch of fuzzy psychedelia. Bandleader Fogarty also turned to social commentary. He penned antiwar songs such as "Effigy," "Fortunate Son" and "Who'll Stop the Rain," which mirrored the sentiments of young Americans who feared being drafted and sent to the unpopular and escalating war in Vietnam.
