Concert Summary

This complete concert featuring the original lineup of Black Sabbath was recorded at the historic California Jam Festival, which today remains the only rock festival staged on behalf of a television series. The idea was to have a massive one-day music fest that would be videotaped and then shown for several weeks, one act at a time, as an entire season of the late night ABC music program IN CONCERT. The show, in addition to being free of the ugly incidents that plagued events like Altamont, was also a substantial…entire summary

I saw this show and I was only 13 years old at the time. Never really knew of sabbath then but afterwards I became a real fan. I now live 1 mile from the now defunct ontario motor speedway. I also met Bill Ward in 1987 when he was doing a project with Tim Bogart. He was fresh out of rehab and freaked out during the 3rd song and D J Bonebrake had to jump up and finish the set. I saw them a couple times after that

Just the thought of seeing Black Sabbath back in the day...Insanely unreal!!! Thanks for sharing--all who left entries! I was just shy of seeing them starting high school in 1980. Chances are I would not have remembered as much detail as is on these recordings....Ha Ha. I listened to my cassette tapes of Sabbath so much I had to buy new ones to replace them (for those of you before CD's). These recordings are the best live material by Ozzy Sabbath I have ever heard. Thank you Concert Vault! You kick A! Keep it coming...as well...

I was at this show. I remember Ozzy well. However, I really got off on Ritchie Blackmore busting up about six stratocasters and tossing them into the crowd during Deep Purple's set. Oh, to Anonymous from 9/12/08: That was Keith Emerson strapped to that flying piano.

The sound quality of this is crap. This was simalcast over the radio. There is excellent quality recordings of this show around if but you have to look around. You can watch the video of this show on you tube. I think a guy called cal jammer has the best you tube clips. I was also at this show at when i was 15. I dont remember much except it was hot and i was stoned.......

Black Sabbath was my first rock concert. I think I was 15 or so. 1973 or 74, not sure. It was great, very, very loud. My ears were still ringing the next day. I was too young to see the 60s greats like Hendrix or Joplin. Or Cream. The closest I got was I begged my folks to see Sly and the Family Stone in 1970. They refused - said there would be a lot of drugs there (of course they were right about that! Ha!) and of course I was only 12. Funny thing is a couple of years later they let me see Sabbath and there were TONS of drugs at that show. I entertained myself by walking around looking at all the stoned people! Ah parents!

I was at this concert also sitting about fifty feet from the stage right next to where they had hot air balloon set. This is one of the best shows I have seen and I've been to hundreds of concerts at the Filmore and then Winterland after Filmore closed it's doors. With so many people there and all got along great with people sharing food and other stuff all around. It was really hot that day so they passed out galloon jugs for water at sunset the whole place was tossing these in the air so water sprayed over the crowd I looked back and all you saw jugs flying thru the air just as Black Sabbath came on.
