Concert Summary

Recorded just weeks after the release of his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., this historic opening set from Bruce Springsteen comes from a time when Bruce and the entire band could still (just barely) fit in one car. The E Street band, as Bruce's famous cast of backup musicians were called, came to encompass a particularly different and larger configuration, and the classic lineup from the mid-1970s only has two of the members from the backup band Springsteen plays with here.

Still, Bruce…entire summary

Love to hear Mad Dog on the drums. Max doesn't hold a candle!

Thundercrack is definitely one of my favorite Bruce songs. I've always wondered why it never made it onto any of his albums.

Great show!! Didn't get to see Bruce till "74 when he opened for Dr. John at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Saw him there again in "76 with the Miami Horns.Countless shows later we are pushing 60. Unreal how time flies when you're having fun.

Liner notes don't say it was a "first set," they refer to Bruce's "opening set" as he was the opener for Blood Sweat and Tears. Here's the notes from that Italian Bruce site: Notes: ONE show, 8PM, double bill, with Springsteen opening for headliners BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS. Ironically Bill Graham, who'd nearly signed Bruce/Steel Mill 3 years earlier, orchestrated this concert. The setlist derives from an excellent quality soundboard recording that began circulating in the mid-1990's. Given Bruce's restricted performing time as the opening act, the circulating audio is likely to represent the complete performance. The circulating audio is missing the opening seconds of "Lost In The Flood".

Thanks Wolfgang's Vault, it brings so many shivers of recognition to hear Bruce just like I did in '73, when he tore the house up at the Celebrity Theater, Phoenix Arizona, one of the first towns beyond Asbury Park to truly appreciate him and the band. Vinnie "Loper" Lopez was extra special and frankly I always missed David Sancious musical chops after he left the E Street Band. It was never truly the same without him, which is how things change, adapt and grow, I guess.

Nice to see this essential early Bruce show here in pristine quality, had it for years on an excellent bootleg btw. Saw Bruce last wednesday and he's still GREAT!

"...and the classic lineup from the mid-1970s only has three of the members from the backup band Springsteen plays with here." Actually only 2 now, as Danny Federici has moved on to the next realm.

Yea, it may not be the Esteet lineup of today, but Bruce and the band never really sounded better than this. This is what I want to pay to download. Please take of the legalities on these classis concerts. I can't be alone in my willingness to pay for this type of quality. I may have to resort to some creativity to get this onto my pod. I'd rather not.
