Don McLean earned his place in the rock ’n’ roll pantheon in 1971, when he released his first album on United Artists and delivered a legendary single called "American Pie."     For completeness, the summary should probably mention that Mr. McLean plays the banjo as well as the acoustic guitar. As to the concert itself, what a great lyricist. Too bad he was pigeonholed by one song.
