Concert Summary

If you’ve ever found yourself delicately fingering through a pile of Dave Edmunds 45s at a record swap at 8am on a Sunday, this might be one for you. Founded during the mid-‘60s and managing to persevere well into the next decade, Earth Quake was pounding out infectious power pop before such a genre even really existed.

Their’s was not an uncommon story: Smalltime band gets major label attention only to be sucked ever downward into the A&R vortex before eventually being released from their contract. Shortly thereafter, however, the unauthorized use of one of their songs in a movie…entire summary

I saw them probably 50 times between '75 and '78 - mostly doing double bills at the Keystone where they played with the Greg Kihn Band or the Rubinoos. They'd do two sets both Friday and Saturday nights and I'd not be able to hear most of Sunday! They were (and still are) my favorite band. Cost $3.50 to get in. I disagrre with "not rondo", they may have played a free concert earlier in the day but at the beginning of this show you hear Bill Graham introducing them so it's clearly the Winterland show. I am so sad that Gary is gone. I remember him well standing there, often wearing that Cub Scout shirt you can see on the 8.5 album photo, playing those matching notes with Robbie. I see Robbie plays with Larry Lynch (ex-Greg Kihn Band drummer) and the Mob. Check out their website.

Wow, what a find. It is very hard to find their stuff though there was never a ton available. I first saw and met them in Modesto in 1973 when they opened for Copperhead. I remained friends with them for some years and lost contact. I ran into Stan Miller in the early '80s when he was with The Hyts. Does anyone have any contact info on any of the former members? I knew Gary Phillips passed. Thanks for any help and thanks to WV for the great music. Stay Funky, Kenny.

The Lonbranch was where they used to play. I too was a bike messenger for US Mess., my buddies from Rocket were there too. Saw them at The Village on Columbus, North Beach Art Fair, Grant Street Fair, Berkeley Aquatic Park, Marx Meadow, Winterland, etc. John Doukas, Robbie Dunbar, and the rest of the band Kicked Ass every show! Love Them. Thanks for their album info.

Great band , I saw them a lot at a little club in Oakland but I can't remember the name. Stared with an L. They were a rocking band, both guitars were great and rythmn section smoked.

Note: there are two CDs of Earth Quake: "Purple - The A&M Recordings," which comprises their first two albums on A&M Records, and "Sittin' In The Middle Of Madness," a twenty track anthology of Beserkley Records tracks. In addition, four live songs are included on "Beserk Times (Live Over Germany)" issued on British label Castle Records in 2000. This sort of archival find is EXACTLY what I wrote about in an earlier post; while I'm as happy as the next guy to see yet another Dead tape exhumed from the vaults, it's really difficult to find a quality tape of what was a local phenomenae. Props to WV for the Good Rats tape, too, for the exact same reasons. Now...if only there is a tape of the Squares (Satriani's old band....) out there.....

I was a bicycle messenger for Speedy's Messenger Service when this was recorded. Earthquake performed this set in the Financial District the afternoon before this Winterland gig. To the best of my memory that afternoon was unseasonably warm and sunny. Secretary's were leaning out the windows of the office building they were performing under. The streets surrounding the concert were packed. Everybody danced. Power pop never sounded so good. Thanks for the memories!

Along with The Elvin Bishop Group , Earthquake was one of my favorite bay area party bands , in the 70's. Saw them many times at the Keystone Berkeley and they opened for a lot of the heavys at Winterland and various other shows , I saw , in Northern California . I have all their albums ( 2 on A&M and 4 on Beserkley ). I also have a test pressing of Two Years In A Padded Cell . But the one to have is Rockin The World . It was first released like a bootleg . Plain white cover , with a drawing of a clown , white Label and it said " A Beserk Recording " . This album rivals J. Geils Band - Full House as one of the great party albums of all time . They were one of my local favorites . Thanx for adding this highly underrated band to the archive . Gonna listen to set right now . Thanx , David , keeping his Head Held Hi .
