Concert Summary

Guitars are tough. No one will argue that fact. The good ones are made of little more than wood and metal and are designed to make awful noise - screeching, rumbling, wailing, chugging, skronky, angular, awful noise. And it's great. But piano? Aren't those for parlor recitals and dance choreography? Nay! Says Elton John. That bundle of pine and ivory was meant to rock!

In late 1970, Elton John was not yet a household name in the States, nor had he…entire summary

It's so much fun to listen to this. You can hear how delighted he is at the reception, how exciting it is for a musician to find his audience. I especially like the encore--not because it's so great musically but because the band is worn out but they come back and just pour everything they have into Can I Put You On. It's like they're thanking the audience. It can't be said too many times: thanks to all here for bringing back so many memories, and for creating new ones.

I hate to say this, but I'm sure Elton blew this crowd away. There is no way the Kinks could have out done this performance. This is a rare mis-match where the opening band was young and fertile and ready to woop some ass!! The nuances of this perfomance is one of a kind. Not to mention a very good recordind by the Fillmore or whomever. WoW! Thanks Michael. P.S. I do love the Kinks by the way.

This is definitely the best Elton I've ever heard, period. Cheers to Sir Elton. Michael.

I was so pleased to hear this recorded...I was working at Fillmore West during their stay ...they played 3 days and of all the shows and groups coming thru, they made such an impression on me...I gave Elton a Fillmore West jersey that he wore for a few performances...and they have remained lasting friends ....Now He is Sir Elton...actually he was very sweet and shy and thoughtful....! Nigel is still by his side on the tours and they are one of the greatest infuences of my life...Thank you for keeping this treasure preserved.....

I always have felt that the 11/17/70 album was the very best thing he recorded.... such a treat to have this recording as a companion. This first tour of the states was, without a doubt, the finest work of Elton, Dee and Nigel. He began to wander into other realms as time went by and made some great music along the way but, I will always have a great affection for the trio approach to songs like these performed with such passion and power before a live audience.

I was at this concert at the Carousel Ballroom. I was a Kinks fan, but when the new guy that I had never heard of came out, with his back to the audience, half an orchestra, a beautiful harp, bright yellow jacket, real dark glasses (I thought he was blind), laid one of the best performances ever!
