Concert Summary

This show was recorded on ELP’s legendary Works tour, which began with a 65-piece orchestra and choir that the group took on the road. Arguably one of the biggest undertakings in rock history, after three weeks of performing to great reviews the band had to drop the massive entourage; even with most of the shows selling out, the enterprise had already cost the band $4 million. In the end, it was decided they would carry on with their usual three-piece format, and the remaining three weeks of the U.S./Canada tour featured this lineup.

There are plenty of live ELP albums…entire summary

I was lucky enough to see ELP 2nd row center when they reformed in '92 at the World Theatre (now the Midwest Amphlitheatre) in Tinley Park,IL. It was incredible and seemed like they never lost a step. I've also seen Carl when he was with Asia in '82 and Keith/Carl when they were in the band 3, but that will never compare to the real thing. Tarkus is the most technical prog rock album of all time!!!!!!!!

I had the good fortune to see this Works tour in Montreal with the full orchestra and then in Toronto sans the orchestra.....with or without the symphony, ELP were and remain one of the alltime supergroups....Emerrson is a virtuoso on piano and as a drummer myself, I continue to marvel and anything and everything Carl Palmer does !

Glad you like this show Reese, but let me correct you. This concert, and all concerts here at the Vault, are NOT bootlegs. We own the actual tapes and rights to every show on the Vault. For more info visit our About page. Cheers!

I missed the Works tour but my sister's husband did manage to record the last ELP concerts, Oakland Coluseum and San Francisco Cow Palace. I must say, after hearing these two on here, ELP really tightened up the act along the way. Let me tell you, I have never heard a more blistering performance by this trio . Those bootleg tapes really have the band at their best. Carls drum solo is absolutely astonishing and there will never be another like him.

Saw them on the first leg of the Works tour on 5/26/77 in Nashville, TN, with the orchestra. It wasn't the most fun concert I've ever been to (that honor goes to either Bruce Springsteen or the Newsboys), but it was by far the best in terms of sheer impact and technical amazement. I'm glad these old tapes are out there!

Saw the show with the 61 piece orchestra at Montreal's Olympic Stadium; it may have been the first of the tour. It was truly amazing. I did see them again later(Forum) as a three piece but I must admit, I prefered the latter to the former. Maybe being a LOT closer to the stage had something to do with it.
