Concert Summary

Recorded at the very first of his famed Halloween shows from New York's Palladium Theater (a yearly ritual for Zappa until he stopped performing), this performance demonstrates just how important Frank Zappa had become as one of rock's most enduring innovators. It also demonstrates Zappa's kooky and sardonic sense of humor. After introducing his band, and telling the audience that the show was being recorded, they launch into "San Ber'Dino," a song about a modern rodeo cowboy who falls on hard times. BOWLING ON CHAREN is one of the most beautifully unique and lyrical guitar solos I've ever heard. Zappa's tone and phrasing really grabs me on that number.....

I've always gottin' in trouble, and pisst off, and alienated every girl I've known when I play my F.Z. records(most of which are vinyl, kept in dust and skip free). I saw frank and his band in boston in the mid 70's they were playing the usual genius performents when this little unknown named steve vai came out to do a solo. I thought frank was amazing, but when steve was finished, he dam near stole the show. thanks frank for showing steve where it's really at!!!!!

I saw many a Zappa concert but the best were the Halloween concerts at the Auditorium theatre in Chicago. I'd sure like to see one in the vault. Zappa, forever the showman, and perfectionist, was always having fun which translated to the audience having fun with him. Robert - Orlando FL 4-17-09
