Concert Summary

In 1982, Jethro Tull pushed their Tolkein fantasy rock to the logical extreme by releasing Broadsword and the Beast (which boasted an album cover bedecked with runes) and dressing up in Viking outfits and touring with a lavish show featuring a pirate ship fit for Spinal Tap. It was feared that Ian Anderson’s merry assemblage of audio pranksters had run out of ideas.

But in 1984 Jethro Tull hung up their English costumes of yore and adopted a cyberpunk stance. They revamped their sound with synthesizers and turned out Under Wraps to the scorn of critics and fans alike.…entire summary

Broadsword and the Beast and Under Wraps were actually among Tull's three best records (the other being Heavy Horses). Yes, Under Wraps was marred by horrendous machine drums, mixed too far to the front, and with too little bass, but the songs were among Anderson's best. Great to hear the band stretching itself in this concert to do these songs justice and in doing so expand its regular concert repertoire, which was already getting staid even then (let alone today). Just too bad that the critics didn't get it... that, combined with Anderson's voice trouble, was the end of Tull as a genuinely innovative creative force. Bizarrely, the critics began liking Tull after that... tells you how little they knew, and know...

What a fantastic concert. I have been a fan since 1971 and have seen Tull live 38 times in my lifetime. I have nothing but the best of memories from the members of this band, old and new.

Ottimo concerto. Indescrivibile la magia che Ian Andersonn riesce a creare intorno a se, rendendo la band, unica ed originale, nel firmamento della musica pop mondiale.

Tull always deliver! But a little extra on this recording. Absolutely great. And yes the sound quality is top notch.

I'm pretty sure the song listed on Track 15 as "Keyboard and Drum Solo" is actually "Fly By Night." It is correctly noted as such on the previous evenings show. Somehow, it appears that it got sliced into two separate tracks for the recording of this show. Anyway, Tull never sounded better. I never realized that the material on "Under Wraps" was powerful. The superb drumming really fills the songs out. Sure beats the heck out of the drum machine used on the album.
