Sage, "and they call true love a crime" isn't from Ry's "Why Don't You Try Me?" It's from the great O.V. Wright's "Eight Men, Four Women", the Jury of Love who call .... Both great songs.

The lyric "and they call true love a crime" is from Ry Cooders song "Why dont you try me tonight"

I saw John for the first time at the HUB ballroom on campus at the University of Washington in Seattle, as part of the Ry Cooder Band 1980. Ry gave him a showcase even!! He sang a song that had a refrain that went something like "...and they call true love a crime" and I have been an ardent fan ever since!!! Anyone know this song? I can't find it anywhere!! I believe Darrel V. was in that band, and he just kicked ass!! I hope it was you Darell. Can you confirm that? Was it John's band that Ry picked up to tour with? Anywho, kudo's to the webmaster for an excellent site- now I really can't get any work done!!! :O)

This is a terrific set. I saw John for the very first time just before he released "Bring the Family" He did most of the songs on this set as well as a few others. (Let's hear it for the now defunct "Hi-Lo" in Boulder, CO!!)

Sorry to tell you this, but you have the band listings wrong. My name is Darrell Verdusco and I played drums for Hiatt off and on from '78 to '85. Playing with STARSHIP (w/Mickey Thomas)the last 17 years. Anyway, the band was: Fred Stickley, keys, John Stahaely, guitar, myself on drums, and Jesse Boyce on bass. You've listed the players who played on his new record at the time. Thanks for the great website!

Sorry for that obvious error, we've corrected it. Bonnie also record Hiatt's song "No Business" on Luck of the Draw.

Sorry 66kicks, didn't see your comment when I posted. I wasn't ignoring you.

Hiatt wrote "A Little Thing Called Love" for Bonnie Raitt -- not "Let's Give "em Something to Talk About". I'd love to be able to hear this concert, but the player keeps dying after about a minute. Anyone else have a problem with the player?

Actually Hiatt wrote "Thing Called Love," which was Bonnie Raitt's biggest breakthrough hit from the Nick Of Time album. Shirley Elkhard wrote "Something To Talk About", which came out on Luck Of The Draw a couple years later.
