Concert Summary

Laura Nyro was a pioneer in combining the pure essence of folk-rock with gospel based blues that she vocalized with a powerful and haunting dispatch. Probably better known as a composer for other artists such as the Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand, Blood Sweat and Tears and Three Dog Night, Laura's own legacy of concert performances was sketchy at best.

Laura is my goddess. What a contrast this early show is with her mid-70's and later "live" appearances! Here she moves from barely audible shy wood nymph to wailing banshee and back and forth. In this show, she exhibits exactly the same extreme dynamic range (making listening difficult sometimes) that characterize her earliest albums on Columbia. I love her later work more actually, but it is her early albums that establish her as a true original. Seriously, no one else has quite ever done material like "Captain for Dark Mornings" and "Gibsom Streets" before or since. The world lost someone unique when she departed this place.

Laura Nyro was so natural in what she did, she seems so suttle yet so powerful. I've quite never heard any song like "Captain for Dark Mornings", and in this live performance Laura gives it sensitive treatment. Same with "He's a Runner". "Map to the Treasure" gets Laura going to the homage of "Up on thhe Roof". She, to me, was beyond the Brill writers. Speaking a new New York lingo. New Generation-tinged. medatative. introspective, then jubilant. I will always love Laura for her dedications to JFK, RFK, and MLK in "Save The Country". What a New York Spirit I will always treasure, like fine wine, but I'm a rich man, 'cause I can have this tonic every day! I love you, Laura.

Laura Nyro live 1970? what an awesome find! Like the finest jazz, each performance by laura is a beautiful and rare gem that just gets better with every listen. Laura is the greatest songwriter/solo perfomer ever, and these live recordings are eternal treasures. "He's a runner" is pure magic! Pray that more of these recordings are discovered. further proof that rolling stone magazine commited a terrible crime when they didn't include Laura in their 2008 "greatest singers of all time" issue. Music of this caliber must be elevated much much higher. Her love, her art, and her spirituality lives forever!

Stunning is all I can say. Having never really had the opportunity to hear Laura playing live, warts and all, this concert now provides a mesmerising performance featuring voice and piano and a great selection of songs. It is also nice to hear Laura giggling nerously away to herself as the crowd show their affection to her. Marvellous - thanks Wolfgang !

Michelle Phillips told me that Laura was NOT boooed at Monterey Pop and that she actually turned in a decent performance. Mama Michelle did say that Novice Nyro was very nervous and that Laura, herself, was insecure and so unhappy w/ the performance, that Michelle tragically missed Otis Reddings (Michelle's favorite performer)show because she had to drive Laura around Monterey and calm her down with a cigar-sized joint.

Laura Nyro here, essence of the very best of who she was. Laura loved the concerts. A woman, those compostions, that piano and her tone and voice. We all adored her. Cultish following, her shows were like musical trips. I will never forget her. Thanks Wolfgang for this trip back to the reality of her work.
