Summary

By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.

There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous…entire summary

Dantar/05-08-2008 They played as the "house" band here at a place called the Grand Phaloon in the late 60's early 70's. I used to see um a bunch on Friday and Saturday nights back then.Skynard always rocked the house. Rowdy bunch. Gary Rossington is a fantastic guitarist. He never really gets credit for just how good he is.

Saw them with the Charlie Daniels Band in Pittsburgh in December 76 or 77 (cant recall) and I was 14-15 years old. I remember Van Zandt without shoes rocking as good as it then leaving the stage for 15 minutes during the Freebird guitar solos. The CBD were incredible around that time as well. Also had tickets to see LS at Three Rivers Stadium about a year or two later when the plane crash caused the cancellation of thatg concert. I recall the crash being just days after the Street Survivors album came out with the band in flames on the front (they have since changed the album cover - albums - what are they?). Never another band like these guys in their old-time prime.

Never did get to see them, something I regret. I heard that Pete Townsend was very impressed with them during the quadrophenia tour in '73.

Got to see them in Philly in 76 where the band did a few songs from "STREET SURVIVORS" in the set that night. Too bad that such a terrible tradgedy took Ronnie and the others away from us way to soon. RIP FREEBIRD
