During the latter part of 1971, Stephen Stills, who was a prolific songwriter at the time, began sessions at Criteria Studios in Miami for what was initially intended to be his…entire summary

I listened to this everyday going to and from science class in 10th grade(held across town because of court-ordered bussing). By the time we got to class we were in the right state of mind for the study of rocks. Thanks John H. for giving me this 8-track. The fiddle player on the album lives and plays in Gutrie Oklahoma. He puts on a great festival every October and often has Chris Hilman on the bill. He won't talk about the recording session in Miami, due to his squeaky clean bluegrass persona he has taken on. He did play the fiddle for the Stones, and everyone else who wanted a fiddle player on their records, so I'm sure he could write a great tell-all book.

Saw Mannassas live in Copehagen, great show and a great band, best thing is that Chris Hillman was a memmber of the band, in Copenhagen he did a lot more old Byrds songs than in this concert, I?m told that on the fareweel concert even Roger McGuinn played, would have loved to see it. I was at this concert. It was amazing. First time saw Stills outside of CSNY. Also saw him perform at his bar in Lahina in Maui in the 80's. I think he is one if the best guitarists of the rock era.

Can't agree with Java Master. Each to their own, but to me the first Manassas album was the best thing Stills ever did.

Philadelphia, Spectrum Arena; May 12, 1972. From the fourth row, center, Stills was at his best, fluidly flowing through every genre of music but opera. Rock 'n' roll, blues, country, bluegrass, acoustic solo and extended jams. Stills was a powerhouse back then, and credited his talented band by insisting the marquees read Manassas and not Stephen Stills. White Falcons, brown firebirds, cherry les pauls and a load of wooden martins, lined the stage, while and the band played in perfect position aligned like the posterized black n white centerfold of the eponymously named first album. Stills wore the white number two football jersey, with the purple/yellow shoulder stripes. I believe it's a Louisianna State University jersey, which was similar to the what the Minnesota Vikings wore in the day. Blue denim pants, and brown leather cowboy boots clearly visible while he tapped in four/four timing during the interlude in "Sugar Babe." I've worked as a news photographer and an usher, security and changeover crew member in arenas for more the 25 years. I've seen almost everything imaginable; Manassas easily ranks in the top three, along with the Stones' 72 shows in Philly. For the doubters, give the first album an objective listen, if possible, and keep in mind how smoothly Stills shifts from genre to genre; he's an incredible musician. He's white on the outside, black, latin and european within his musical heart, spirit 'n' soul. PHOTOSFROMPHILLY..roger
