Concert Summary

Although Mott the Hoople was coming off three incredibly successful years that began when they released the David Bowie-penned "All The Young Dudes," the band had become bona fide rock stars in the U.K. and a big draw in the U.S. mainly on the strength of charismatic lead vocalist, guitarist and writer Ian Hunter, whose Dylanesque vocals and biting sarcasm contributed to the foundation for the modern punk movement. The band had formed in 1968 as a…entire summary

Mott were a great band and both "Drive on" and Shouting And Pointing were very good albums. I always liked Nigel Benjamin on vocals and Ray Major on guitar.

The above all seems pretty accurate, but I want to add that the Shouting and Pointing album has some very interesting elements, and I think it a shame that it garnered so little attention. Some of it is a bit like "It Takes One to Know One" from the concert here, although that song was on Drive On. Some of the songs are often over the top and intense, although there is the more gentle ballad Career - which builds toward a powerful finish, and some of the most interesting and tasteful guitar licks I've ever heard on See You Again. Worth checking out if you aren't completely wedded to hearing Ian Hunter on vocals.

Trivioligists with no life will note that the last song (All The Young Dudes) is sung by Stan Tibbetts, the origininal lead singer of Mott The Hoople, who defaulted to manager when the considerably more talented Ian Hunter came on board. I presume Tibbetts (not certain of the spelling) was still the manager of this version of the group (Mott, not Mott The Hoople, as the prior poster correctly observed).

This is NOT Mott the Hoople BUT the band Mott which was the band formed after Ian Hunter left. It features original Hoople-ites Overend Watts on bass, Buffin on drums, Morgan Fischer on Keyboards and new members Ray Major on lead guitar (replacing Ariel Bender) and guitarist/vocalist Nigel Benjamin (who tried to replace Ian Hunter). While longtime fans of the band probably bought their first album "Drive On' it was clear the magic was gone. They would release just one more album, "Shouting & Pointing" and then disband. Everyone in this band except Nigel Benjamin would go on to form the band British Lions with John Fiedler taking the lead vocal spot.
