Concert Summary

This performance was the first of three extraordinary QMS shows from an inspired run at the Fillmore West. The wonderful quality of the recording aside, this is just a fantastic performance.

Unfortunately, this is only a partial recording, as the tape begins with the show in progress. The first track, "Cowboys and Indians," is an outstanding, unreleased instrumental that contains all the elements that made this lineup so well respected among San Francisco musicians of the day. By late 1968, when this concert was recorded, Cipollina and Duncan's guitar playing was reaching peak levels…entire summary

Saw them at a little joint called the Whiskey A-Go-Go. Sat about 20ft above them on the huge speakers and they nailed everything. I couldn't hear for a couple of days after that, but it was the best concert I ever went to!

This version of Calvary is a masterpiece! So is Mona and Maiden of the Cancer Moon. This period of time was their high water mark.

maybe it was not this night's concert, but it was one of these november 68 run at the Fillmore West... Quick had just come back from tour and Duncan was a no-show one night, so Cipollina asked Santana to stand in... Fog of rock and roll memories.. I can remember the 60's and I was there...

This was the homecoming concert of a tour that had seen Quick go back east and play the Fillmore East, Boston Teaparty, Chicago and a number of other concerts... It was also the breakup tour for the original band... Duncan did not show this night and John asked someone to go out into the Fillmore audience and locate a Latino guy named named "Carlos" as in Santana... the concert had already started, but Santana was located and he played the Duncan parts that night... I know cuz I was there

Yes, this is definitely the Mona/Maiden/Calvary from Happy Trails. The beginning of Mona sounded like a higher key than I had remembered (I haven't heard Happy Trails in maybe 30 years), but once they got into Maiden, I was transported back to being a 17 year old in my friend's bedroom, which had walls painted flat black, a blacklight, and lots of day-glo posters. Ahh to be a faux surburban teenage hippie in those days!! Sometimes we would really push the edge and take the train into NYC to soak up the Greenwich Village ambiance - amazing that our parents let us get away with it, no chaparones.

This was an amazing run The Quick & The Dead & Linn County. I saw two of the shows have no idea which ones but it was Quintessential Quicksilver both nights-QMS Delivered! Dead was Very Hot too & Linn County was a real good band. They were great shows. I saw Quicksilver & The Dead quite a few times being a SF Bay kid and this one stands out as a very High Time in the Wild West.Pre-Dino Quicksilver Messenger Service..Wadda Band!!
