Concert Summary

Renaissance was a truly unique English band that had a rather strange history, achieved much success and left behind an extraordinary body of work loved by fans around the world. The band began in early 1969, when ex-Yardbirds guitarist/vocalist Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty augmented their acoustic group with ex-Nashville Teens keyboardist John Hawken, bassist Louis Cennamo and Relf's sister Jane on vocals to become Renaissance. Saw them a couple of times in Toronto around '75. Brilliant! Flawless playing and Annie even better than in the studio if that was possible. Some great female voices in rock down the years - Sandy Denny, Joan Baez, Gracie Slick etc etc, but Annie was the best live. If ever you're confronted by a classical music buff who derides the musicianship and vocal ability of contemporary bands, play them some Renaissance. I'd love to hear a live concert with Andy Powell guesting on "Ashes" (as on the album). Don't know if that ever actually happened though.

What a glorious blast from the past. A big fan of Brit prog rock, I was always poking around record bins for something new and I stumbled upon a Renaissance LP, Turn Of The Cards, in the mid 70s. I fell in love with the band and "The Voice". Annie Haslam has one of the great, unique voices of our generation, and what beautiful songs, arrangements, and orchestrations. They just don't make 'em like they used to.
