Concert Summary

Simple Minds were at their peak as a commercially successful and critically acclaimed recording and performing act when this show was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour on the band's Once Upon A Time tour. The basic line-up of the band was augmented by vocalist Robbie Clark, and ace percussionist Sue Hadjopolous (who had worked extensively with Joe Jackson).

The group had been around for eight years when they finally hit platinum pay…entire summary

Your reviewer is clueless. The reason this set is so strong is that five of the eight tunes are from their best album, the incomparable New Gold Dream, from two years before this tour. This was the Sparkle In The Rain tour, which to me is a decent but far inferior album that marked the beginning of their musical decline. Fortunately, two of its best tracks are here, Waterfront and Speed Your Love, but they pale next to the classic NGD tracks and the old school Minds tune, The American, from their second-best album, the underrated Sons And Fascination. Kerr's voice really is unique and so strong, and the band is kicking here. Forbes and Gaynor were a remarkably unheralded rhythm section; these guys made this band way funky, and Charlie's ethereal guitarscapes made the perfect foil along with Mick's rich keyboard washes. I saw the NGD tour in a 3,000 seat theatre, tenth-row dead center (I was the first person in line for tickets! Man, that album blew me away when it came out; still does). It was sublime, even better than this show, as they were just peaking. But this is a very fine set in any case, and it's good to see it here, and rated so highly. Finally more folks will hear the genius of New Gold Dream, one of the very best records of its time.

The Newcastle gig on here is far better than this effort, just goes to show that The Minds, went back the way after New Gold Dream,no arguing about it,factamundo.I saw them at Tiffanys in 82/83 and they were at their peak,I'd love to see them like that again, but there's nae chance.at least then Jim didny waste every song with silly ad-libbing. Oh well, here we go for 4IAR

This is NOT from the "Once Upon a Time" Tour '85-'86. This show was taken from the "Sparkle In The Rain" Tour '84. I saw this show about 1 week later in Montreal at the Universite de Montreal, Centre Sportif - China Crisis was the opening act...great show, such power! Those were the days......
