Concert Summary

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a much-acclaimed session player from Texas when he got hooked up with David Bowie in early 1982. Bowie was in the beginning stages of recording what would be his multi-platinum album, Let's Dance. Once he heard Vaughan and his biting style of blues-drenched guitar, he had to have him. Vaughan agreed to make the album, but when Bowie offered him the 18-month world tour attached to the record, he passed.

Certain he could make it in his own right, Vaughan and his back-up band, Double Trouble, pursued and eventually landed a meaty solo deal with Epic Records.…entire summary

bricon what an evening it must have been!I intended the review for the next generation who may just be discovering S.R.V.for the first time. You mentioned another great guitar virtuoso,Jeff Healey.Had the pleasure of spending a little time with Jeff during the mid 90's. Such a nice guy and a great sense of humour.Again, gone far berfore his time.

Bricon I hear ya, Stevies Passing was extermely a saddenig experience. Fortunatly I saw him in NJ open for Robert Plant and latere at Madison square garden with Jeff Beck. My Hippie cousin had never heard of him but got tickets to see Beck. Blew her mind when Stevie ripped Vodoo Child!!

stanhope i don't think there's a Stevie fan on the planet who doesn't know of (and own) the El Mocambo dvd by now. It's one of his best known and adored live performances. I was lucky to be there that night, and later met him in 1989 backstage at his skydome show with Jeff Beck and Jeff Healey. Of all the musicians who i admired who passed away during my life Stevie's affected me the most. He just had this presence about him, an aura, that i have never felt around anyone since.

In 1983 S.R.V.performed at a seedy(always great for live music)bar in Toronto called The El Mocambo, the same bar the Stones recorded part of "Love You Live".Stevie's performance documents the birth a true guitar genius.Although Stevie's deamons are circling he plays as if his life depends on it,at times almost lost in his own immortality, other times playing as if possessed by some spirit from another dimension. The audience is left slack jawed & the topper is that the performance is avaiable on DVD format.Pick it up,pour one, turn the lights down low, turn it up & experience a young Texas guitar slinger playing as though he already knew he was stealing time from the Devil.

If you only listen to one song from this concert, make it "Lenny" as it reveals just how Stevie used his guitar to speak to you. Awesome bluesman.
