Concert Summary

Just compare Styx's "Suite Madame Blue" with Led Zeppelin's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" and it will become clear to any doubters why Styx was able to find a very happy home at AOR radio stations between 1971 and the late-1980s. This show, taken from the Bill Graham archives, shows them near their commercial peak after the release of the initial A&M releases Equinox, Crystal Ball, and The Grand Illusion.

The group emerged from a popular Chicago club act, the Tradewinds, that featured brothers John and Chuck Panozzo (on bass and drums) and vocalist/keyboardist…entire summary

Styx was the first band that I ever saw in concert (not counting Angel, who opened for them) at the old Capitol Center in MD. My friend and I were smoking cigarettes to try to look cool and some lady turned around and said " It's your first concert isn't it?!" I still remember it to be a fantastic show and I have attended Styx shows many times since.

Finally, a complete GRAND ILLUSION show! I saw this tour at the STANLEY THEATER in Pittsburgh. Balcony dead center front row.. APRIL WINE opened and it was a terrible snowstorm out.. what a night! This was when they were STYX... Am glad to hear this one!!

Memphis 1983 was my time to see Styx. After years of being a dedicated Styx fan, I finally got to see them in concert. Mr Roboto was the tour. I remember that not only the music and sound were top shelf, and the theatrics were very entertaining. The event started off with a 20 or 30 minute fantasy/sci-fi movie, and at the movies end, Tommy Shaw continued with the dialogue and acting seemlessly from the movie to the stage about the dangers of rock n'roll and how its illegal and such and that led up to the 1st song of the show, Mr.Roboto and off that rocket went. The group covered all the great songs from old to (then)new. I don't think they missed a hit, and then some. Just amazing.

Agree with sgt pepper, there are some bad spots but it's still an incredible show and the only vintage performance of Man in the Wilderness I've been able to find. Saw them for the first time this summer at Smith Mountain Lake in VA and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Gowan is an exceptional live performer, while maybe not quite having the dramatic flair Dennis has. Now, if only there was a full Cornerstone/Grand Decathlon show out there...

This has got to be a boot. From the beginning, STYX always had a great mix (usually from the tour manager himself early on). What ever happened to Al Stackwell or Vince DePaul? I first heard them in '73 and either worked or had the pleasure to just listen to every succeeding tour. This sounds like someone's (probably Chuck's, or John's) monitor mix. Too bad! Great live rock band. RIP John & JC.

Probably saw one of their first concerts at a small college in Monticello, Arkansas back in 1974. Liked them then and still do over 30 years later.

I saw this show at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY aroud the same time in the winter of 1978. The show was much tighter, which may be due to the poor audio on this recording. A friend was a stage hand at City Center in NYC during the Domo Origoto era and got me tickets, they had gone Hollywood by that time but the show was incredibly sharp.
