Concert Summary

One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both Fillmores East and West. TYA went from virtual obscurity to rock superstardom simply as a result of their…entire summary

Oh well. A guy can have a bad night from time to time. Shit, if people paid to watch me paint they might be disappointed from time to time. If they expected me to paint a masterpiece each night, and be completely in control, they would surely be disappointed. If I was expected to paint the same painting everynight, yeah, it wouldn't always be successful. Meanwhile, Alvin Lee rocks! Always! yeah, sometimes when painting I fall down drunk, but I do get up and do wonderous things, sometimes.

I saw TYA in Portland Oregon, it was my first concert ever. I think this was the tour, if not in 71 it was in 72. The site sure brings back my teenage concert memories, what a find.....

I wish Bill Grahams video collection was not destroyed in that fire years ago. I would give anything for DVD's of TYA's Concerts. First saw them when they played back-up to Canned Heat at the old Fillmore-been our favorite bands since. Even hitch hiked to the Olympic Auditorium from San Jose to see them after they played the Carosel Ballroom when Cricklewood Green came out.

Gary P writes below about how wasted Alvin Lee was and I have to say he sounds wasted when he talks. But, when the music starts -- it's another story. I have often wondered what drugs these guys would take and then jump onto the stage and play a set. Heroin seems a bit much for this high energy. Speed balls? (Horse and speed). Drunk? My god, what a scene backstage must have been in those days. Get drunk then drop acid? Who knows....I wish I had seen them live. Stupid move on my part, as I had plenty of chances.

The cream of the crop of the British boogie bands, decent on record, but definitely at their best live. This is one hell of a great performance, not just for Alvin but for the other guys also. Check out Chick's crazy Hammond solo on "No Title". Ripping stuff!
