Concert Summary

Although The Beach Boys are often disparaged for not being as "hip" as other Fillmore era bands, they were undeniably one of the most innovative groups of the '60s, and Brian Wilson's production and arranging skills still stand as having created some of the most compelling recordings of that decade. This set, recorded live on the closing night of the Fillmore East, captures the group at a time when their performing abilities were at a peak - just as…entire summary

Happy B'day today to Mr. Bruce Johnston (interesting slightly jazzy rendition of Elton John's "Your Song")

Everyone complains about the guy mixing the tape, could the tape of deteriorated over time instead?

and-Rafster, you're totally, totally tripping if you think the Beach Boys didn't evolve beyond the sixties! I'd suggest you go and listen to their early seventies albums like Sunflower and Carl and the Passions, but I suspect you'd rather stick with what you 'know' ;)

Great to hear...shame Dennis wasn't there (injured hand, apparently), as despite all the criticism this is one of the clearer sounding live Beach Boys recordings I've heard from '71, and that was HIS peak...often sang several lead vocals, and presented some amazing unrecorded songs, like 'I've got a friend' and 'Barbara'

Michael Bassplayer is exactly right. I saw the band many times throughout the years. When they had Steve Despar their studio engineer mixing the board (you could usually tell because Carl would ask him to change the monitor mix) or someone who knew what they were doing, the mix and sound was really good. Otherwise it was really a mixed bag. This recording is nowhere near what the band sounded like on a good night. Most sound techs at this time did not know how to mix the band correctly and it showed. They were used to guitar bands and didn't have the slightest idea on how to balance 5 or 6 people singing complex harmonies. But on the good nights when everyone was singing well and the guys running the sound knew what they were doing (and when the audience was appreciative of songs like "Cool Cool Water" instead of yelling out "409") the Beach Boys in concert were pretty magical.

I was at the free concert at Central Park [NYC] and when they appeared at the Seaside Concerts at Coney Island. They played all the favorites. Mike Love, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine were in fine form

This is clearly *not* an audience recording. An unmixed/unbalanced soundboard or a stage mike set up imho.

wow they stink. lead singer is off key and so are the harmonies and the music. Even for 71, they are so out of it. They destroyed "Wouldnt it be Nice" Its too bad since this is a classic. But the cover of Elton Johns "Your Song" was actually okay.
