Concert Summary

Opening a hometown bill that also featured the Keith & Donna Godchaux Band and Kingfish, The Sons of Champlin set the bar at an astonishingly high level to begin the night. Delivering a set of their unique psychadelicized soul-funk, this captures the band shortly after the release of A Circle Filled With Love and the re-release of their self titled album, recorded during 1974 in their home studio and originally released on their own label,…entire summary

I saw the Sons of Champlin at the Bullfrog Festival outside Portland, Oregon in July 1969. Lots of great bands there for those three dizzy days, but two really stood out. One was the Portland Zoo, a topic in its own right. The other was the Sons of Champlin. They were, in fact, the reason why I was there. My friends had seen them perform in town a few days prior and insisted we *had* to go see them. I still remember them groping for words, trying to describe why the band was so exciting. Words still fail. When they performed that night (sorry, can't remember which night), it was crazy. I was stunned. Overwhelmed. They had the whole park, hell they had the whole lake jumpin'. It was the first time this young hippie got clued into the power of a strong horn section belting out R&B licks. I join the other voices here: thanks so much for giving me a chance to hear these guys again. Of course I have Loosen Up Naturally, but it's been the same tracks in my head for nearly 40 years now. It's great to hear it new.

The band was/is an inspiration. In those days we patterned our garage band after their band. Apparently we weren't the only ones... look at all the horn bands that followed. The horn section was new then to rock and soul music... they incorporated the theme of incorporating the themes... bringing people together and bringing music together...acceptance. The lyrics were another innovation; Champlin's messages of empowerment, personal love, universal love and personal freedom. The Sons of Champlin, The Sons, Champlin were with incredible songwriting ability. It couldn't be denied in a hip market and couldn't be denied in a pop market either. Champlin, you know contributed to writing and ultmately performed "After the Love is Gone" on TV when Earth, Wind and Fire recorded the song and won the Grammy in 1979. I grew up in the city and it's true the Sons of Champlin sometimes blew away bands they opened for. For me anyway, that happened one night at the Fillmore... moved to Market Street... They opened for the Dead that night. I love(d) the band.\\Will

First show I ever saw was Boz Scaggs at the Berkeley Community Theater, 1973, I was 13. The Sons opened for Boz, nearly blew him off the stage. Spent weekends throughout 73-75 listening to these guys at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo. Unbelievable sound; Bill's voice could peel the paint of the walls. They came back about eight/nine years ago, with Mic Gilette of Tower of Power on trumpet. Sounded great, Bill has not lost a bit off his voice, still one of the best soul singers around, and Haggerty ? Monster guitar player.

great band! I was playing bass a few days ago along with the old LP's that I've burned to CD's, and watching the sons "secret" DVD last nite. More fans of Chicago should hear Bill's Real band!!!

As a decades long fan of the Sons, I was pumped to see this come up on the Vault....just outstanding. Truly, one of the finest bands of that or any era.
