Concert Summary

This is a great example of a Sons of Champlin show, recorded days before the release of their second album. The Sons were very experimental and capable of smoking improvisation. Most of the songs on this set include lengthy, spontaneously occurring jams.

The show kicks off with four tracks from their forthcoming second album for Capitol Records. The first two songs feature the funky B-3 organ dominating, punctuated by chunky leads from Haggerty and the punch of the horn section. The third song is a treat for fans of this era; "Boomp Boomp Chop" fits right in with their feel-good,…entire summary

As I stated in the "Van Morrison" (4-26-70) concert comments. This show was recorded by "Warren Van Orden" for FM station KPFA in Berkeley. He was the host every Sunday night back in 1970-72 or earlier,of a radio show called "Stays Fresh Longer" which presented live concerts recorded around the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. What a treat to listen to every Sunday night! I now know that Mr.van Orden was part of the Fillmore family at that time. I heard this concert on this program back in early 1970. It is a pleasure to hear this again. I had a reel-to-reel recording of this show back then. But I loaned it to a couple of DJ's who worked at a "Free Formed" underground FM radio station(that rymed with ZAPpa)in Sacramento. The tape mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. Thank You "Wolfgang's Vault" for presenting this concert online. I haven't heard this since late 1970. In my opinion, this IS the best recorded "Sons Of Champlin" concert out there. When I mean best, I'm not just reffering to the sound Quality, but the peak at which the band performed. If you swear that the "Sons of Champlin" first and second albums were their best(like I do), then this is the concert you want to hear! This is the "SONS" I wished I could have seen. Well...at least we have this recording. Thank you again..."Wolfgangs Vault." (Keith is Sacramento)
