Concert Summary

The Who headlined the Fillmore East with Free Spirits and Buddy Guy opening.

The second night of The Who's first run ever playing at the Fillmore East is an unbelievably great document of the band in its early prime, still full of the punk attitude that they would initially define while beginning to venture off into more artistic and experimental territory. Every minute of this performance…entire summary

"That certain person, that shot that certain person,is forgiven." I guess Pete knew his audience. Otherwise the Fillmore East would've been reduced to cinders that very night. Let's not forget this is only two days after the MLK assassination, and many major American cities are already on fire. That being said, this pre-Tommy era concert shows the band in transition from hit-singles band to Hendrix/Cream jam band. This Relax (though incomplete) goes down as one of the best live Who moments ever. It's as if Pete is saying, "yeah, we can jam too". It's ashame they didn't keep this song through the Tommy/Leeds/Who's Next era, who knows what it would've become by then.

Great recording of a great band playing a great gig. My favorite band of all time (Moon era, of course).
