Concert Summary

Thomas Dolby had jumped on the marketing power of the newly christened MTV Network when he released his 1982 breakthrough album, The Golden Age of Wireless. Having been a pioneer in new digital technology and synthesizers, Dolby emerged from the competitive London studio industry to become one of the leading keyboard session players of the early 1980s.

This wonderful Thomas Dolby concert sounds almost the same as the concert contained on his 1983 'Live Wireless' video and laser disc. That performance was at Riverside Studio, UK during Feb. 1983. One major difference between the two performances is that songs like 'New Toy','Flying North' and 'Airwaves' can be heard here without the frustrating sound drop-outs during the above video's visual cutaways to Dolby's projectionist booth (worst affected by this was 'Urban Tribal' - one of Dolby's best early songs). Sadly 'Urban Tribal' isn't included here. However, one very welcome addition (not featured on 'Live Wireless') is 'Commercial Breakup'. It's good to hear this song performed here in the same electronic style as Dolby's other 'Golden Age Of Wireless' tracks. He re-arranged all of his '...Wireless' songs soon after this concert. By 1984 they were all different live (perhaps too different). After a varied and diverse musical journey (and very long musical career gap), by 2006 he would swing full circle and return to his minimalist synth roots (with a new twist) playing many of these songs live again after not doing so for many years. Although all too brief, this Roxy concert catches a youthful Mr. Dolby at his early minimalist electronic peak performing some of his most popular earlier work. The now over familier 'She Blinded Me With Science' is the only weak track on offer here. The highlight: 'Airwaves'.
