Summary

After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year’s Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the…entire summary

Just read mkinsey post . The date is correct . I checked my diary . My last two shows at Winterland were The Tubes and The Ramones , Dec.28,1978 and Tom Petty and Greg Kihn , Dec.30,1978 , the second to the last show at the greatest rock palace ever . I saw 121 different bands at Winterland , and thats not counting many bands I saw there on several occasions . Thanx . David . poststeiner@yahoo.com

I like the new way the 'vault playing' of each song shows the time elapsed, and the time remaining. As for Petty, I'm planning on seeing him at least 2 times, hopfully 3 during this summer's tour. This recording is both historically important and great to listen to. Levi

When will this show (and the other Tom Petty shows)be available for purchase???

My mistake above. Memories fade hard. It was 12/30 afterall. In any case it was a great time to see Petty, truly an early peak and the inclusion of Casadega & Surrender are real treats.

Good American Rock and Roll...There are only 2 bands today that are the greatest...one is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the other is the E Street Band...

The date is incorrect. This was part of the series of shows that closed Winterland in Nov/Dec 1978. On 12/30, the Dead were in residence before their famous closing of Winterland show the next night. This show, which I attended, was probably November 30th, not December. It was definitely before the Springsteen shows in mid December. That said it was a great show with Greg Khin opening...a classic billing of that time.
