I saw them the next night at Santa Monica Civic. Tom Petty is such a great showman! Musically superb but it was Petty's great stage antics that made the show special for me. One great Rock and Roll classic after another to end the show. I recently saw Mudcrutch up in Santa Barbara and, well, a few gray hairs but the same beautiful noise that I saw that night way back then. One for the ages.

I was at this show too. It was insanely good! It was the third time I saw the Tom at Winterland that year. I caught the last drumstick Stan threw, just as the concert ended. It was the first time I ever snagged a stick like that. I still have it! My buddies and I were among the very last to leave that night. It was devastating that there wouldn't be any more Winterland. After the show we headed back to the East Bay and partied until dawn, each of us taking turns telling our favorite Winterland memories. I get a little verklempft just thinking about the old dump. Long live WINTERLAND!

One night after their show @ the SC Civic back in tha day. We partied at the Holiday Inn at the bar w/the original band. When after about our second round the house band (ala Captain and Tennile)broke into the worst version of "Breakdown" you've Ever heard! :) It was almost a apocalyptic moment when for the first time one's rock n' roll/rebel image/integrity/artistry had been co-opted and regurgitated back as elevator/lounge/pablum in front of you, even though it was meant as a homage/tribute. Tom and the band took it well and applauded barely/a smile/a raised glass and a low groan/chuckle as they turned back to the bartender.
