Concert Summary

This is one of the shows in the last tour of the classic "Roundabout"-era of Yes until they reunited after 2000. The band had always been fueled by many internal conflicts, as were many other classic prog-rock bands such as ELP, King Crimson and The Moody Blues. By the time this show was taped for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, there were clearly two camps within the band: the one for more commercial and conventional radio songs, and the camp who…entire summary

Yes played two shows there that day. My ticket stub has "3pm Matinee" stamped on it. Is this the evening or the afternoon show? The concert was unusual because they had a revolving stage in the centre of the hall (rather than a stage at one end). If I remember rightly the stage rotated once or twice then reversed direction (due to problems with the understage wiring getting tangled.

The venue was then known as the Empire Pool (and that's the name printed on my ticket) later renamed as Wembley Arena sometime in the 1980s. It wasn't originally recorded for King Biscuit but for the BBC by Tony Wilson (RIP) on 24 track tape and used to launch The Friday Rock Show. When King Biscuit got to air their remix, for reasons unknown they put it out as being recorded at the "LA Forum". As for punk rock "taking over" that's certainly what the music press wanted everyone to believe at the time, but the facts tell a different story: in the Melody Maker polls Yes members hit "top performer" status in each of their respective categories; record sales were huge; punters flocked to the multi-night sell out at Wembley to the extent where an additional matinee show had to be added. Don't swallow everything you read in the tabloid music press; punk was supposed to kill off prog, but in reality it made barely a dent in popularity. This performance is truly breathtaking, generally acknowledged by fans as Yes at their peak. Awesome musicianship throughout, checkout the mindblowing synchronicity in the instrumental at the end of Silent Wings.

I just keep coming back and listening to this concert. This is just an amazing show. No one can play any better than this. Download is a must for this one.

I was there when I was 14 years old! Me and my brother had tickets for the Arena right at the front in the 3rd row almost close enough to the revolving stage to touch it! Fantastic concert, amazing band. I've always loved Yes, and just more and more so over the years as I've got older. I've been looking for a recording of this spine tingling concert for years - I wish Yes had released it as a CD. Yes at their very very best. You MUST make it downloadable please!

I saw Yes in concert in Cleveland. I'm not sure exactly when, but this sounds like the same tour or close to it. This really brings back some beautiful memories. I have to say Yes is one of my all time favorites. When I saw them Wakeman did a longer solo. He did his Henry the VIII stuff. I am a bass player and I've always loved listening to Chris play, truly awesome. What a concert. What a group. The talent is off the charts.

Thanks for the venue correction. We'll look into it ASAP!

A small correction might be due on the concert-info here, i don't think this show was recorded at Wembley Stadium (a football stadium with over 80.000 capacity) but at Wembley Arena (an indoor venue which can hold about 15.000 fans) ?
